Ex-boarding house once occupied by Nick Cave sells for nearly $4m

A former Melbourne boarding house occupied more than 20 years ago by musician Nick Cave, and friends who became Bad Seed band members, has sold for close to $4 million.

Now a fully renovated prestige home, the four-bedroom offering at the corner of St Kilda West’s tree-lined Mary Street, and Canterbury Road, was developed in the early 1900s.

A 1920s first floor extension by eccentric architect H.V Gillespie (who penned St Kilda’s The George Hotel) added a third living area to the home with a fitted curved lounge.

According to the selling agents, 44 Mary Street and a neighbouring home (42), were configured as a boarding house in the late 1970s and early 1980s, with occupants including Cave, who turned 60 last week.

Chisholm & Gamon agents Jon Kett, Tracey Wilson and Sam Gamon sold the property.
