Basement extension business started

Outgrowing an inner-city house no longer mean needing to selling up for a suburb.

The team behind a North Carlton renovation which turned a 200-square-metre terrace into a 350 sqm metre family home by creating a basement, has opened a business.

“Extending up or out wasn’t an option,” storage consultant Alan Contini said; his heritage protected Princes Hill home occupying almost all the 140 sqm block.

His lower level extension contains four metre ceilings and skylights (story continues below).

For the area, configured with three home offices and a living room, more than 1000 tonnes of clay were excavated.

The businessman’s new enterprise, Melbourne Basement Company, is in partnership with the architect which undertook the job.

Extending below ground level costs about $3500 per sqm, he added.
