Bill Shorten lists Moonee Ponds family home after buying in the same Travancore street as another former federal ALP leader

After failing in his bid at the May election to live at Canberra’s The Lodge, unionist turned politician Bill Shorten (pictured, top, with his second wife Chloe, and children) has spent $3 million on a house in Melbourne’s inner north west Travancore – a pocket within Ascot Vale.

Interestingly, it is in the same street where former federal ALP leader Arthur Calwell lived for most of his life (members of the Calwell family still live there and a park in the area, at 64 Mangalore Street, is named after the late politician).

Mr Shorten, ALP leader between 2013-2019, has now listed his outgoing home in the neighbouring suburb of Moonee Ponds with price expectations of between $1.55-$1.65 million.

The five bedroom Victorian in Eglinton Street (pictured, below) last sold for $842,000 in June, 2009.

The five bedroom Moonee Ponds home was renovated by Ms Shorten.

It was picked up by Mr Shorten shortly after he vacated a home at nearby 16 Laura Street occupied with his first wife, Deborah Beale (that house, Maynooth, also sold about 10 years ago, for $1.75 million. Those vendors traded it in 2017, for $3.01 million).

The Eglinton Street property was renovated by Chloe – the daughter of former governor general Quentin Bryce.

Ms Shorten gave birth to the pair’s daughter, Clementine, in January, 2010, soon after moving to Moonee Ponds from interstate.

Mr Shorten told realestate.com.au, which is reporting the Moonee Ponds listing in this item, that “with three growing kids and two bulldogs, now it’s someone else’s turn to enjoy it as we move to another beautiful part of our electorate”.

The Travancore home the family will relocate to (pictured, below) also includes five bedrooms but is bigger than Eglinton Street – and on a larger plot.

It was acquired after just 12 days on the market from Jellis Craig Kensington’s Brad Airs – who is also now representing the Shortens in selling Moonee Ponds.

Mr Airs said the elevated and tree-lined Eglinton Street is one of the suburb’s best rows.

“We expect it [the home] to be in very high demand with younger families,” the broker added.

An auction is scheduled for December 7.
