Hollywood Hotel trades for c$9m

Doris Goddard operated and lived at the Hollywood Hotel for 40 years.

Surry Hills’ Hollywood Hotel, formerly known as the Tooth’s Brewery, has sold for a speculated $9 million to Parlour Group.

The c1942 five storey venue at 2 Foster Street, at the south east corner of Hunt, was owner-occupied for more than four decades by Doris Goddard, who died in 2019, aged 89.

HTL’s Andrew Jollifee and Sam Handy listed it for sale last month.

Bar owners Justin Hemmes, Stuart Laundy and Maurice Terzini are reported to have shown an interest, as did actors Russell Crowe and Matt Damon.

As well as the bar, the property includes 10 electronic gambling machines and 16 guest suites.

The Foo Fighters took full residence during a 2018 tour – where it was the base for several concert after-parties; it has a 3am liquor licence.

“The sale process, directed by trustee Stephen Goddard, saw numerous Sydney and interstate identities cast an eye…with the…successful party planning to maintain the hospitality origins the hotel is internationally renowned for,” the agents said.

“The level of enquiry was as diverse as it was deep,” Mr Goddard added.

“It brings great pleasure to know the successful party will keep the doors open in a fashion consistent with how Sydney has enjoyed”.

His hospitality company also holds Woolloomooloo’s Riley Street Garage – which is 1930s themed – and Paddington’s Village Inn, which was established in the 1800s.

String of inner-south Sydney pub deals

The deal is the latest in a string in Sydney’s inner-south.

Last month, the Kospetas family’s Universal Hotels acquired the Newtown Hotel from Colonial Leisure Group.

Not long earlier, that suburb’s Botany View traded for c$6m to Justin Small, the occupier.

Three months ago, the Feros family’s JDA Hotels spent $7.5m on Haymarket’s Mountbatten Hotel.

In January, Java Group paid the family of long-time patron Adella Wright-Young c$13.25m for Alexandria’s Camelia Grove, while at Woolloomooloo, the Williams’ W Hotels purchased the Old Fitzroy Hotel from the Pasfield family, which held it for two decades.

Late last year Moelis paid $67m for neighbouring hotels – Kinselas and the Courthouse, at Darlinghurst – with plans to create a new hospitality precinct.

Also in that suburb, about eight months ago, the East Village Hotel, developed in c1918 as the Tradesman’s Arms, and the Green Park Hotel, traded – the latter to St Vincent’s Hospital.
