VCAT to Decide Fate of Dimmeys Richmond Store Soon

Protesters argue a “bulky” new development will have a “detrimental impact” on the heritage significance of the c1907 clock-tower, which with four faces was designed to be prominent from all sides.

Local developer Richmond Icon paid Dimmeys $16 million for the Swan Street complex in 2008. Dimmeys reportedly will occupy, as a tenant, a small portion of a proposed new shopping centre beneath any apartment complex.

In 2009, Dimmeys also sold a portfolio of buildings and car parks that formed its Forges of Footscray store to China-based developers. A shopping centre and commission flats are earmarked for this site.
