IT WILL be the end of another era in Abbotsford when apartment builders redevelop the property known for more than a century as the St Joseph’s Technical School.

The prominent site at 73 – 103 Nicholson Street, at the intersection of Mollison and Little Charles streets, has sold for more than $9 million to a developer.

Operating between 1893 and 1990 under the auspice of the Christian Brothers, and more recently as a campus for Steiner school Sofia Mundi, the 4800 square metre inner-city site was offloaded by the Roman Catholic Trust Corporation for the Diocese of Melbourne.

CHINA-based developers are swarming to redevelop Melbourne residential projects, with 11 projects, yielding some 3000 flats on the cards.

Last month the Jiangxi-based Lyz Group paid the Deague family about $23 million for a major residential development site in Daly Street, South Yarra.

North of the city, Chinese developers are also behind a controversial redevelopment of the Northcote AMF Bowl Centre.

AND so the curtain closes on another Melbourne theatre.

The site of the former Longford cinema complex in South Yarra is set to be redeveloped into a major five-level, 36 unit apartment complex with ground floor shops.

One bedroom apartments in the high-end redevelopment start at $515,000 and include a car park, and storage room.
