A piece of Australian movie history will be auctioned on July 26 and sell for a price the fictional family which made it famous would call “a bargain”.
The Strathmore house featured in the 1997 hit movie The Castle is expected to exchange for between $1,000 and $10,000 – then be relocated by its new owner.
Prospective purchasers could include film enthusiasts, tourist accommodation operators or even home renovators, who might polish up the tired gem on their own block.
The land at 3 Dagonet Street, abutting Essendon Airport, was recently and controversially permitted to make way for a townhouse complex – a move which would have seen the demolition of the three bedroom weatherboard with a poolroom – known to many Australians as the Kerrigan’s house.
However the property owner Vicky Cosentino, who rented the house to The Castle producers years ago – is keen to see the house still stand – just somewhere else.
Ms Cosentino has reportedly spent more than $80,000 maintaining the property she used as an investment. A townhouse was developed some years ago on land behind the home.
