PCA Questions New Australian Population Strategy

The new population strategy, which was reportedly more than a year in the making, deliberately abstains from setting an overall population target.

The former government Kevin Rudd endorsed a “big Australia” which was not popular with voters. However the government says immigration is essential to generate taxpayers to fund pensions for baby boomers set to retire over coming years.

The advisory panel head of the Australian Industry Group, Heather Ridout, said the government could have been bolder in terms of setting population targets.
