Hotel proposal at Scientology HQ

Seven months since paying $8.5 million for the Church of Scientology’s long time Melbourne CBD headquarters, developer David Marriner has proposed a 25-level glass hotel.

The project would create retail and strata office space within the historic structure at the north east corner of Exhibition and Little Collins streets.

The guesthouse is designed to appear separated from the existing building care of rooftop stilts.

The proposal, like the Australian Institute of Architects’ nearby, would rob valuable views from the 101 Collins Street office.

Architect Bruce Trethowan told the AFR the Marriner hotel would include at least 100 suites.

Guests would access it from the fourth floor.

South facing rooms would have bay views.

In an Australian first, the hotel’s facade would be laminated with an abstract image, he added.

The church is relocating to Ascot Vale.
