A fortnight since 400 protesters packed the Hobart City Council chambers calling on representatives to reject a 210-metre CBD skyscraper proposal, the developer, Singapore’s Fragrance Group, has unveiled plans for a 204.7 metre structure.
According to website ArchitectureAU, the updated plans for the Davey Street complex show its tallest tower, a hotel, will rise 179.6 metres with a 25.1 metre spire.
This would supersede a proposal (pictured) reported a month ago for this tower to soar 186 metres with a 24 metre spire.
Fragrance’s latest proposal relocates all of the inset sky-gardens to front Franklin Square (its earlier 210-metre proposal had sky-gardens fronting the building’s four faces).
Hobart’s tallest building is the 1973 Roy Grounds designed Wrest Point Hotel Casino which rises 74 metres, and is set to undergo a $70 million refurbishment.
The height of Fragrance’s proposed building has come somewhat out of the blue: a 2016 proposal, penned by the same designer, XSquared Architects, was for a 120-metre tall building.
A recent report commissioned by the city council suggested a maximum building height of 75 metres for the entire Hobart CBD.
On the mainland, Fragrance Group attempted to build the Melbourne CBD’s tallest residential apartment building – to rise 82 levels, or 302 metres, at 555 Collins Street. This site was later approved for a 47-level, 160 metre tower, however, which it started building in June. Melbourne’s tallest skyscraper, the 101-level Australia 108, is also under construction in Southbank.
