Celebrity chef Shannon Bennett and wife, actress, Madeleine West, sell historic South Yarra mansion

Barwon, South Yarra

Shannon Bennett – the owner of a burgeoning portfolio of exclusive eateries – with his wife, actress, Madeleine West, are understood to have sold their glamorous South Yarra mansion, Barwon (pictured), for close to $10 million.

The deal was negotiated at a private auction this week, which followed an expressions of interest marketing campaign launched last month.

In Cromwell Road, Barwon includes a historic component, penned in c1881 by Percy Oakden, as well as a modern extension. With five bedrooms, two studies and a gym, the home sits on a 1250 square metre parcel of land, with a swimming pool, spa and manicured garden.

The sale price reflects a strong capital gain for the pair who paid $4.805 million in late 2012. Barwon was listed for sale six months earlier for $5.5 million after last trading in 2005 for $2.8 million.

Kay & Burton’s Ross Savas and Steven Rode sold Barwon this time around.

The listing came five weeks after Bennett and West agreed to pay pub baron Mazen Tabat nearly $16 million for his near-new Toorak, home.

On a larger 1514 square metre block, this Lansell Road domain, spread across four levels, is said to include enough bedrooms for the new owners, who have six children.

Bennett’s diners include the exclusive Vue de Monde restaurant and Lui Bar at the Rialto, Jardin Tan at the Botanic Gardens, Café Vue at Heide Museum, Bistro Vue in Little Collins Street and the Burnham Beeches estate in the Yarra Ranges.
