Australia’s biggest builders getting bigger: HIA

Australia’s largest builders have grabbed a bigger share of the new home market thanks to the tripling of the First Home Owner Grant.

Despite a slide in overall starts, many in the Housing 100 list were able to boost business with new developments.

The survey said 49,360 dwellings began in 2008/09 – 39,947 were detached houses with the balance classified as units and apartments.

The number of new residences to be constructed last year was 3,455 fewer than the year before.

Western Australia based BGC (Australia) was the country’s biggest builder by output for the sixth year in a row – it had 3,844 starts, an increase on the previous year (3,304).

In 2008/09 the company constructed 3,580 detached houses and 264 units.

Meriton Apartments was the nation’s largest multi-unit builder with 1,791 starts – an increase on 707 in 2007/2008, when it finished fifth.

HIA’s Chief Economist, Dr Harley Dale, said that the tripling of the First Home Owner Grant to $21,000 favoured larger builders and prevented a more significant fall in overall starts.
