THEY came, they saw, they conquered – and now they are selling up.
The list of developers putting vacant blocks on the market after demolishing the period homes that stood there has grown.
This time, in Canterbury’s “Golden Mile”, builder AXF Developments is selling a cleared 2330 square metre site at the corner of ritzy Mont Albert Road and Wentworth Avenue.
The site will be auctioned with a permit for a medium density apartment complex.
AXF’s proposal stirred local outrage last year as it involved the demolition of a 1930s Art Deco home and garden.
Period homes are fast becoming a scarcity in the leafy eastern suburbs, once renowned for their untouched streetscapes.
Marshall White’s Mark Dayman and Antony Woodley will auction the vacant Canterbury block at 12:30pm on Wednesday June 23. It’s expected to sell for about $7 million.
In a similar scenario, earlier this year, businessman Rodney Smorgon listed 4 Trawalla Avenue, Toorak, for sale as a vacant block. Mr Smorgon demolished the historic home and tennis court that occupied on the site while obtaining permits and marketing apartments for a project that never took off.
As for Canterbury, the local’s attention has moved to 36 Monomeath Avenue where an overseas investor plans to replace a period home he bought last Christmas, with a new home.
The 2295 square metre block with a tennis court is one of the biggest in the street, once touted as being Melbourne’s most exclusive address.
