Boutique real estate agency Woodards last week launched its partnership with the Bionic Ear Institute at a special function held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The event included a special appearance from Bionic Ear Institute member, former ballet principal and author of the best seller and internationally acclaimed Mao’s Last Dancer, Li Cunxin.
Mr Cunxin’s own daughter Sophie was born deaf and since receiving the Cochlear implant has gone on to learn music and Chinese and is now a high achiever currently completing her VCE.
Woodards CEO John Piccolo said the union would allow the company to assist the institute in raising further funding, which would enable further research and awareness. Coincidentally, John Piccolo’s wife, Sharon, was a former teacher of Sophie.
The Melbourne-based Bionic Ear Institute was formed more than 40 years ago and aims to give deaf children and adults the opportunity to participate at full capacity among the hearing world. In 1985, the team implanted the first child with a multiple-electrode Bionic Ear which started a world-wide trend. The Australian bionic ear has since been implanted in more than 50,000 people throughout 120 countries.
