Collectors of fine art, and fine property, have a week until March 3 to inspect the Toorak mansion of art collector Alex Copland before it goes under the hammer.
Dalmah, the 6-bedroom Italianate mansion in Bruce Street, is expected to sell for more than $3.7 million. All proceeds from the estate will go to the Copland Foundation, a charitable trust offering scholarships for Australian students to attend cultural related programs run by the Attingham Trust in the United Kingdom.
Mr Copland, who’s family owned an established furniture manufacturing and upholstering business in LaTrobe Street in the early 1900s, was himself a student at Attingham.
His appreciation for clocks and collectables were later extended to rare cars – all of which are now on the market with proceeds going to the Foundation.
Dalmah sits on almost 2000 square metres of land with a north facing garden, swimming pool (with sun deck and change rooms), a servant’s headquarters, two kitchens and an enormous formal study. RT Edgar’s Greg Herman is handling the sale.
Mr Copland died in 2005. Up until then he was a popular figure in the Toorak Village.
