Moreland City Council says it has received expressions of interest from multinational construction firms to regional housing associations, and from community-based special interest groups and other businesses for its $1 billion tender to redevelop 12 hectares of prime Coburg land into an almost car-free village.
Mayor Joe Caputo told Capital Gain the initiative “has opened up opportunities for both the big end of town and grassroots communities to think outside the square” and “become part of the exciting renaissance” underway in the working class northern suburb.
He said the next stage of the “Coburg Initiative” is to short list respondents for a second stage of offers, factoring in recommendations. It is likely a winning tenderer for the precinct will be announced about mid-year.
