Queensland based developer and listed property trust QIC has announced a $20 million expansion of its Watergardens Town Centre shopping centre, in the north-western suburb of Taylors Lakes.
The expansion will add an outdoor restaurant strip and fitness centre to the massive 115,000 square metre shopping centre, which only started construction ten years ago.
“The restaurant development along Station Street responds to market needs in an area where demand for leisure amenities outstrips supply,” QIC head of global real estate Laurie Brindle said. “We have undertaken extensive market research to determine what the community needs. The results identified a pent up demand for restaurants, particularly those with family appeal.”
QIC says the restaurant strip will be the first dining precinct for the region, which, like the shopping centre, has magnified in size since the late 1990s. Some of Melbourne’s newest suburbs including Sydenham, Hillside and Taylors Hill abut the centre at 399 Melton Highway.
The new development will extend along Station Street, which links the shopping centre to Watergardens Railway Station.
Last year, QIC undertook a $150 million expansion of the centre, adding a Safeway supermarket, Big W and 100 specialty shops.
