The Port Melbourne studio that shot award winning films Shine, Muriel’s Wedding and The Man From Snowy River is set to make way for a residential conversion.
Developer Emery O’Brien plans to buy the site on the corner of Rouse and Dow Streets off Cascade Films, and build 83 apartments in three medium level buildings. Should the project win council approval next month, the building’s existing sound stage would be converted into seven apartments. In all, the height of each building will be six levels.
The site was originally a starch factory before being converted into studios in 1972. Cascade said that the Port Melbourne site is no longer suited to the company’s needs, but hopes the production company can stay within the area.
Michael Emery of Emery O’Brien said that the proposal would keep all heritage elements inside and outside the building.
Port Melbourne is home to plenty of Melbournes who‘s-who. The latest celebrity to call the suburb home is former North Melbourne Captain Wayne Carey, who this week paid $1.4 million for an apartment at the waterfront HM@S tower.
