Now, when Paul Kelly looks over the bridge to the MCG, he’ll see a Nylex clock - and high rise apartments.

The first residents of the 10-level Era apartment project, built on the former Cremorne Gardens Amusement Park site in Richmond, have moved in.

According to historian Dr Mimi Colligan, the world’s first 8 hour day march was held at Cremorne Gardens, and Australia’s first hot air balloon was launched. The Cremorne precinct also had its own gasworks, theatre and dancing menagerie and was an activity hub for Melburnians in the 1860s.

The Cremorne Gardens redevelopment is one of several high density projects approved in Richmond over the last ten years. The precinct of Cremorne in particular, with its massive and often disused industrial blocks, is dotted with high rise apartment projects.
