A former Telstra supply branch in the outer south eastern suburb of Springvale will make way for the biggest homemaker centre in the southern hemisphere.
The City of Greater Dandenong this week approved an amended planning application by the sites owner, Harvey Norman, to develop a $300 million, 81,400 square metre homemaker centre at the corner of the Princes Highway and Westall Road.
The homemaker centre will include a 30,000 square metre Ikea store, a 13,000 square metre Harvey Norman store and up to 15 smaller retailers with tenancies starting from 1000 square metres and averaging around 4000 square metres.
The approved amendment will see the number of car park bays increase from 1800 to 3000, and a greater number of buses pass through the complex.
Construction of the centre is set to commence in July next year, after remediation is carried out on the site. Ikea and Harvey Norman expect to be trading at the site by 2011.
A Harvey Norman spokesman said it had taken almost 3 ½ years to achieve the planning approval. It bought the eight hectare site in February 2004 for $14.6 million, $4.6 million more than developer Folkestone paid for it eight months earlier.
The homemaker centre will benefit from having a major arterial road, which connects the busy Monash Freeway to the Princes Highway, arrive at its doorstep. However construction of this road is not expected for some years.
The complex will be set into a landscaped environment with one undisclosed tenant intending to include a kayak pool and rock climbing feature as additional attractions.
