Boutique home builder Gilpip Bayside Projects Pty Ltd has paid about $10 million for the St Macartan’s Primary School, in a ripe-for-redevelopment pocket near the beach and central Mornington.
Gilpip director Gary Wilson said the soon-to-be-defunct school, on a 2-hectare site in Tanti Avenue, is likely to make way for a luxury 17-unit, 25 townhouse development.
The school is in a central position close to Mornington’s Main Street shopping village and adjoining parkland which connects to Mills and Shire Hall beaches.
It was widely tipped Becton would buy St Macartans, which abuts its successful Mills Beach 40-unit luxury townhouse project, where once stood a convent.
Becton chief executive officer Hamish Macdonald declined to comment on whether the developer threw its hat in the ring, when contacted by Capital Gain. Knight Frank director Michael Hede, who sold the property, also declined to comment.
St Macartans was offloaded by the Catholic Church, which will use the funds to equip a bigger, better St Macartan’s Primary School, currently under construction on an inland site in Bungower Road.
