Genesis Fitness Clubs will open its national flagship gymnasium at Camberwell’s controversial The Well project, near the Camberwell Junction.
The $80 million, 7-storey The Well building at 793 Burke Road is being developed by First State Developments and Andrew Myer, a member of the Myer family dynasty.
The Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal ignored Boroondara councilors recommendations and approved the project in October 2006, citing the Melbourne 2030 policy, which encourages high density development around existing transport nodes.
The Well will include 42 apartments, 2410 square metres of office space, and 7000 square metres of retail space, anchored by a Coles supermarket. It is expected to be open for business from August.
“Camberwell is a well established area and requires a five star facility,” said Genesis Fitness Clubs chief executive officer Greg Oliver. “The city view and ease of onsite parking for our customers make this a prime location.”
Genesis has signed for around 2400 square metres of space for a ten year period.
