The man the AFL encyclopedia once described as a great player, but an unreliable kick, has put his Sorrento beach house on the market.
Tony Ongarello, Fitzroy Lions-great turned television commentator, says he is selling Ellis Cottage at 3465 Point Nepean Road.
Ongarello made headlines when, as goal kicker for the Lions in 1955, he introduced the ‘place kick’ to the then-VFL competition. Frustrated at missing some easy goals in a round four clash with the Cats at Brunswick Street Oval, the next time he marked the ball, he rested it on the ground and kicked it, soccer-style, between the goal post. He scored two goals that way and it won the Lions the match.
The Place Kick let him down in a match against the Bombers later in the season however, and was never seen again.
Ellis Cottage is a renovated federation home in Sorrento’s ritzy-end. It overlooks the Sorrento Golf Club to the rear and is a short walk to the Sorrento Pier. It includes two residences, the biggest including a living/family room, separate dining room, two bedrooms and an entertainment deck.
A smaller residence comprises two double bedrooms, open plan living and dining area with fire place, verandah and outdoor area.
The agent looking after the campaign sells she expects it to sell for more than $1.1 million, after a private marketing campaign.
