The property industry lost one of its hardest working personalities this week, with the unexpected passing of prominent property investor Ezriel Rabinowicz, aged 87.
Mr Rabinowicz, who also went by the name of Mr Rabinov, sold his successful hosiery business to start a property portfolio largely of retail assets leased to Coles and Woolworths – who he once supplied to. Many were in provincial Victoria.
In 1994, Rabinov and business partner Ronald Serry sold 19 of these supermarkets to Macquarie Bank Ltd, which used the properties as seed assets for its Macquarie Countrywide Property Trust – now worth some $5.6 billion.
Between 1994 and 2001, the partnership, which went by the name of Rabinov Group, acquired another 16 industrial, office and retail assets, the majority of which were sold to GE Capital Real Estate in 2001.
Described as a generous, wise, hard working and a counter-cyclical investor, Mr Rabinov is survived by a wife, daughter and two granddaughters. He died at home on Monday.
