A pricetag of $5.85 million has been slapped on the last remaining penthouse at the controversial Esplanade Apartment complex in St Kilda.

The luxury apartment tower has just four penthouses which have been fitted out at staggered stages. The last penthouse, which was until recently a shell, is about 8 weeks from completion.

The 10-level tower was developed by Becton, over a former bottle shop behind the Esplanade Hotel. An original plan to build a 35-level apartment tower was shelved after public outcry. The Espy Hotel was later given heritage listing.

Becton chief executive Max Beck sold his Brighton home for a record $11.2 million last year, to move into one of the Esplanade penthouses.
