Deaf Ears, Just the Ticket For Parking Protester

A registered vehicle owner has been slogged at least three parking fines, leaving a protest van outside the Chapel Street office of State Treasurer John Lenders and Prahran MP Tony Lupton for most of the week.

The protester calls for the politicians to save Stonnington’s “unique shopping precincts and liveable communities” by saying no to extended parking clear times.

However any calls seem to have fallen on deaf ears, with Roads & Ports Minister Tim Pallas yesterday (Friday 29/8/2008) announcing the first of 160 changed parking conditions, the first of which affect Punt Road South Yarra, Hoddle Street Richmond, Ormond Esplanade Esplanade and St Kilda Street in Brighton.

Chapel Street is one of the suburban strips expected to be affected by the changes, part of the Government’s $113 million congestion plan, Keeping Melbourne Moving.

There are fears the plan would congest South Yarra and Prahran side streets with more parked cars. A lack of parking may affect the precinct’s attractiveness as an office or retail location to tenants as well, agents warn.

The changes, which affect morning parking times, will be rolled out until the end of the year. Starting early next year, afternoon parking time restrictions will be rolled out, Mr Pallas said.
