Australand to Sponsor Sunshine Golf Club Pro Am

Three years after Australand enticed members of the Sunshine Golf Club to sell its Fitzgerald Road Sunshine course, and relocate to a site it owned further west in Derrimut – the developer will be the major sponsor for the Club’s inaugural Pro-Am, to be held at that new course next month.

Australand offered members of the Sunshine Golf Course a new 18-hole championship course and club house on a Mount Derrimut Road site it owned, nestled behind the Western Ring Road and the Deer Park Bypass in 2005.

As part of that deal, Australand acquired the 84-year old golf course on Fitzgerald Road, which it is developing into the Callaway Park housing estate.

It wasn’t the first time the developer approached golf course owners for their land, which are typically in established suburbs. In 2003, it offered the private owners of the Croydon Golf Club more than $35.1 million for its 43 hectare course in Melbourne’s east.

The Croydon Golf Course relocated to Yering in the Yarra Valley, about 15 minutes further east.

The vendors exploited the Melbourne 2030 planning policy, which allows for golf course development in areas zoned as “green wedge” and where residential development is banned, sources say.
