Two years after Deakin University controversially sold its Glenferrie Road campus to developers, boutique builder Ashington has unveiled its $150 million vision for the site.

A total of 31 terrace homes will be built along the historic garden steps of the Stonington mansion, which was the Governor’s residence when Melbourne was Australia’s capital. Terraces range in price from 780,000 to $1.3 million.

The redevelopment will also include 14 apartments, in a separate building, priced between $2.1 million and $3.8 million.

On Somers Avenue, once Deakin’s southern boundary, 12 individual maisonettes will be spread across five buildings with a “mansion-look” facade. Each maisonette includes three bedrooms with ensuite, a study, courtyards, balconies, useable attic space, basement parking for three cars and large storage cages.

The maisonettes are amongst the most expensive homes in the Stonington Malvern development, starting at $2.7 million and rising to $3.6 million.

Deakin controversially sold its campus to developers Hamton Property Group and ISPT in late 2006 for $33 million.

The sale included the heritage listed Stonington mansion, which the Kirner Government gave to the university at no cost for education purposes in the early 1990s.

Hamton and ISPT since sold Stonington Mansion privately for about $18 million. In June, it sold the 1.7 hectare balance of the Deakin campus to Sydney-based Ashington for $45 million.

Stonington Malvern is Ashington’s first residential project in Melbourne
