I’ve had a couple of dealings with residential real estate agents this week that have left me very disappointed (as well as angry).
The first involves a case of what I am concerned may be rental auctioneering – an illegal practice – and something I am following up as a Sunday Domain (Secret Agent) column item.
Two Saturdays ago, I inspected a family home in Essendon advertised for $530 per week, with friends who are looking at moving into the area. At least five groups took application forms as well as my friends.
Today my friends were called and it was explained to them that because of a “miscommunication” between agent and landlord – the incorrect rent was advertised (on all the main industry websites). The landlords of that property now want $600 per week.
To do with the number of applications received? Or an honest mistake.
I’ve asked the REIV for their position, and will be interested to see how they respond.
The second case involves a one-bedroom flat in Brunswick that was to be auctioned in late February. Inspection times were online as 5:45pm today (February 6), with another on Saturday February 9.
The property is being marketed conjunctionally by a major, and a mini real estate agency.
I went to the inspection tonight with another friend of mine who is in the market. The board had a SOLD sticker on it. And not an agent in sight, anywhere. It was VERY frustrating.
Agents, if you’re reading: co-ordinate your advertising and make the effort to go to inspections, if any online changes haven’t taken effect in time.
The property is still listed online as for sale, and open for inspection.
Is anybody else looking for a rental, an investment, or a home frustrated with agents in the industry?
