Robin Boyd Home Environmentally Sustainable, Before the Term was Even Coined

A home described by Melbourne University’s Professor of Architecture Philip Goad as one of the most important post war residential buildings in the country, can now be yours, for a short stay anyway.

The Boyd Baker House, designed by renowned architect Robin Boyd and built for mathematician Michael Baker in 1964, is now available for rent. Like all Robin Boyd home, this one is bold and unique – utilising Environmental Sustainable Development 40 years before the term was even coined.

The inside of the home is built around 12 stone cylinders each incorporating a water storage tank. The living areas are built around these cylinders and a central courtyard.

When it became clear that the State Government nor the University of Melbourne could buy the house when it was put to the market last August, groups such as Heritage Victoria or the National Trust were scared the Bacchus Marsh property could wind up in the hands of a developer.

Instead, a property entrepreneur has restored and furnished the home – and put it to the rental market. Be prepared to pay for the privilege however – weekend stays start at $1800, rising to $3000 for the week.
